Steve Sidaway: 'texting inclusive'

Steve Sidaway: 'texting inclusive'

Any school looking for the most effective digital means of communicating with students can forget Facebook, eschew email and turn off the Twitter. Simple texting wins, digits down, as the most inclusive form of communication.

At the University of Bath this week (Wednesday, May 19) some of the leading users of texting in UK education will be sharing their experiences and expertise at the free “Let’s talk about txt6!” conference organised by service provider txttools Ltd for users of its leading edutxt service. Text services have enjoyed adoption in further and higher education – and as an interactive feature at conferences – but take-up in schools has been slower.

student textingCan an SMS txt messaging strategy really improve communications in an educational environment?
It is widely known that text messaging is socially and digitally inclusive, over 98 per cent of UK adults now have a mobile phone. Many organisations are adopting simple-to-use interfaces from companies such as txttools.co.uk. This service allows the user to send and receive SMS text messages from their computer and track the delivery, much like e-mail, but with audited delivery. Hopwood Hall College – Simple but Clever

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Hopwood Hall College have recently launched a new website to provide existing and potential students with a bright, modern and easy to use website which provides easy access to information using a variety of new media. Award winners Zen Web Solutions were commissioned by the college to design and build the site and worked hard behind the scenes with txttools’ own John Hunsley (IT Manager) to integrate our SMS service directly into the website.

When potential students search for courses on the website they are able to obtain the course information they require through a communication channel which suits the individual such as social networking sites or creating a personalised online prospectus. We love the sms function the most. When a potential student is on a page illustrating course details they can choose to have course details sent instantly to their mobile phone via sms by simply entering their mobile number into the relevant field on the course page and clicking send. This sms can then be forwarded on to others interested, and the relevant web page can be viewed again on their hand set or desktop. The great benefit to the College is that they are able to monitor interest in particular courses and use this data for recruitment drives and the like whilst also creating a personalised experience for the potential student.

We think this is a great example of what can be done with our txt tools and look forward to what they will think of next. See it for yourself at www.hopwood.ac.uk.
