Mill Systems, healthcare software specialists, have a three year record in delivery of Test Result text messages to patients of Sexual Health and Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) clinics, and to clients of the National Chlamydia Screening programme. This speeds up the time to deliver results and also reduces pressure on frontline staff answering calls from patients anxious to know their results.
Cy-nap and Mill Systems have collaborated to provide SMS text messaging as an integrated element of Mill Systems’ TeleCare Sexual Health software. The integrated text messaging service is currently in daily use within 29 NHS sites utilising the TeleCare software. The integration of text messaging with the TeleCare database allows batches of predefined messages to be sent to patients from result, recall lists and diaries. This is a highly cost efficient method of patient contact, saving time, materials and administrative overheads for the clinics using TeleCare.
Following the introduction of Payment by Results (PbR) contracts for GUM Services, integrated text messaging is now also playing a vital role in reminding patients of their appointments. Missed appointments have a major impact on funding provisions for individual clinics and also on a national scale, with 1 in every 10 appointments missed costing the NHS in excess of £250 million a year. Text reminders are acknowledged by Connecting for Health as an innovative way of helping reduce the number of DNAs, which can run as high as 28% in some clinics.
The integrated messaging within TeleCare allows batches of reminder messages to be generated in advance from the clinic diary page, and then for the messages to be automatically transmitted at the appropriate reminder time.
Meditxt is a web-based, automated SMS text tool, which is based upon the txttools application suite and service, and tailored for specific use in the healthcare industry by Mill Systems. The tool integrates with both Mill Systems’ TeleCare product and other PAS systems used throughout the NHS. With a cost per text message of less than 10 pence, TeleCare Meditxt can be set up to contact patients according to the preferences of the individual healthcare specialist. Any information exchanged will automatically be updated to the patient record, ensuring these are always accurate and up-to-date. While similar services are currently available for General Practitioners, TeleCare Meditxt is one of the first automated text tools for NHS hospital GU clinics.
Sam Morrison of Mill Systems “We incorporated the txttools SMS platform into our TeleCare product almost three years ago and I know that recent successes with Chlamydia Screening Offices are in part due to our ability to send notification of screening results by text message. As healthcare specialists, Mill Systems have been working successfully with txttools to deliver a high quality service that fits the specific needs of the NHS, and can provide significant benefit to the clinics, healthcare professionals, and their patients.” He continues “TeleCare users are supportive of the text message option as it dramatically improves efficiency. Patients are also able to benefit from a higher level of access and service from the clinic.”
Stephen McCann of technology partner txttools “This technology has now been in uninterrupted service within the NHS for quite a few years now. It is proven to have a significant positive impact. By intelligently integrating mobile technology within their existing healthcare IT systems, Mill Systems is making the provision of healthcare services more efficient and accessible. Together with Mill we are proud of the high level of service we have been able to provide. We encourage all potential customers to talk with any of our existing customers – nothing beats hearing the message from the people who use this technology every day.”
About Mill Systems
Mill Systems are a small independent software development and support company. The company came about as a management ‘buyout’ of the TeleCare product from the large medical software company, iSOFT PLC, some 4 years ago. Since then the company has grown in staff, turnover, reputation and number of system installations.
Mill Systems supplies software solutions specifically for Clinic Management. With considerable experience also in laboratory systems, and system inter-connectivity, our staff are completely familiar with the needs of NHS organisations and the ever–changing requirements placed on the usually limited NHS resources in meeting demanding targets.
