Rockwell Automation is set to significantly improve its internal business communication by adopting SMS txt messaging

23rd January 2003
Rotterdam, Netherlands
Today, Rockwell Automation, one of the premier global industrial automation suppliers announced the decision to adopt software which allows anyone in the company to have emails transferred to their mobile phone as a text message (email2txt). The software is free to use and will enable the company to dramatically and cost effectively improve much of their communication. Rockwell pay a standard rate for text messages that they use and the message is delivered across-border to all mobiles regardless of which European country the operative happens to be in.

The SMS text message market is booming – in August 2001 text messaging broke the magic one billion – one billion text messages were sent in the UK in one month! In October this year the level had reached 1.5 billion in one month and the growth shows no sign of slowing and what is more 18% of text messaging traffic is accounted for by business users.

So what about use in manufacturing companies? Rockwell Automation has identified ways where the use of text messaging will be the most effective and appropriate method of communication and these are some of their findings:

* Instant Messages – about any event that needs to be transmitted right away. Getting alert messages to operatives who are in the field or simply away from their desk
* Reminders for key dates / training days / calendar dates
* In house communication between managers/ engineers etc

Why use SMS text messaging?

* email2txt allows instant messaging to both PC and phone increasing the percentage chance of instant message receipt.
* Send multiple messages instantly. Phone calls take time whereas the same message can be sent to all the mobile phones in your group straight away
* Free text message software is available from txt tools
* Cut down on administration time, paperwork, save money and it’s eco-friendly
* Messages can be created and edited from any web enabled PC and then sent instantly or queued to go at a more appropriate time
* All the Rockwell staff carry a mobile phone so reaching them at any time of the day is easy (unlike e-mails)

“This is an exciting new service for us – it means that we are significantly improving our internal communications and as a direct result the quality of our service to our clients. Also, we know from our experience that a lot of communication is unnecessarily involved, sometimes you need to simply impart a small piece of information to everyone in the firm. Using conventional means this can be a laborious process. Text messaging very elegantly solves this problem for us. ” commented Ian Bagshaw, European Manager for Business Continuity & Security, Rockwell Automation, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
