Chris Rice explains how Milton Keynes College adopted an integrated media approach for its student recruitment campaign.

Milton Keynes College is a further education organisation in a competitive situation. The aim is to attract the maximum number of students onto its courses.
Milton Keynes College is one of the fastest growing colleges in the UK and has over 3,500 16-18 year old students. Full-time recruitment is up by 40 per cent in the last three years.
Our strategy is to use the student as the hero in our marketing communications. The department’s marketing plan has a commitment to communicating with potential students using their preferred methods and media formats.
Our preferred style is to use peer-to-peer integrated multi-channel campaigns – “take one simple message and work it hard”.

Any school looking for the most effective digital means of communicating with students can forget Facebook, eschew email and turn off the Twitter. Simple texting wins, digits down, as the most inclusive form of communication.

At the University of Bath this week (Wednesday, May 19) some of the leading users of texting in UK education will be sharing their experiences and expertise at the free “Let’s talk about txt6!” conference organised by service provider txttools Ltd for users of its leading edutxt service. Text services have enjoyed adoption in further and higher education – and as an interactive feature at conferences – but take-up in schools has been slower.

It is widely known that text messaging is socially and digitally inclusive, over 98 per cent of UK adults now have a mobile phone. Many organisations are adopting simple-to-use interfaces from companies such as txttools.co.uk. This service allows the user to send and receive SMS text messages from their computer and track the delivery, much like e-mail, but with audited delivery. Having the ability to create discreet groups of students, clients, patients or staff can have major benefits when you want everyone to be notified with a single message.
